Hannah is crazy about the musical, Hamilton.  All her girlfriends are obsessed with Hamilton, along with half of America.  She’s has been playing the music non-stop for the last week, and I gotta tell you, the music is remarkable.  I love so many things about this musical.  I love the fact that this musical, which won 11 Tony Awards and is selling in New York City for $1000 a seat, achieved all this through color-blind casting, where the best voice won regardless of its owners’ color of skin.  I love that Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote Hamilton and plays Hamilton, was inspired by reading a book – Ron Chernow’s big, thick biography of Alexander Hamilton. I love that people are being entertained by rap and inspired by the story of our founding fathers.  I love the idea that there exists this love song to America and all for which America stands.

There is one sweet ballad, Dear Theodosia, that just melts me.  Dear Theodosia puts to music a touching, tender side of this historical story.  In this scene, Aaron Burr is addressing his newborn daughter, Theodosia, while Alexander Hamilton addresses Phillip, his newborn son.  Their love is palpable; these new fathers have clearly lost their hearts.  We can all relate to that, right?  That feeling the first time you held your newborn son (daughter, niece, nephew, godchild)?  That burning desire to protect this baby, to give him the world, to have a ringside seat to watch him live his amazing life?

Here is a link to the song on YouTube. If you haven’t heard it, please don’t take my word for its loveliness. Please go check it out.

Hamilton the Musical – Dear Theodosia Lyrics

“Dear Theodosia” is a song from the Broadway musical Hamilton performed by Leslie Odom Jr. (Burr) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton).

[Burr]
Dear Theodosia what to say to you
You have my eyes
You have your mother’s name
When you came into the world you cried and it broke my heart

I’m dedicating everyday to you
Domestic life was never quite my style
When you smile, you knock me out I fall apart and I thought I was so smart

You will come of age with our young nation
We’ll bleed and fight for you
We’ll make it right for you
If we lay a strong enough foundation
We’ll pass it on to you
We’ll give the world to you and you’ll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Yeah you’ll blow us all away
Someday, someday

[Hamilton]
Oh, Phillip when you smile I am undone, my son
Look at my son
Pride is not the word I’m looking for
There is so much more inside me now

Oh, Phillip you outshine the morning sun, my son
When you smile, I fall apart and I thought I was so smart

My father wasn’t around

[Burr]
My father wasn’t around

[Hamilton]
I swear that

[Both]
I’ll be around for you

[Hamilton]
I’ll do whatever it takes

[Burr]
I’ll make a million mistakes

[Both]
I’ll make the world safe and sound for you

You’ll come of age with our young nation
We’ll bleed and fight for you
We’ll make it right for you
If we lay a strong enough foundation
We’ll pass it on to you
We’ll give the world to you and you’ll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Yeah, you’ll blow us all away
Someday, someday
